The common characteristics in most of the bikes used in mountain biking are that they are durable and give high performances on rough terrain. These bikes have dual suspension shock absorbers or a front fork, tires which are knobby as well as wide, and frame tubing which is large. In order to make these bikes more durable, they also have to have a heavier ratio of bicycle weight to rider as compared to the bikes used on the roads.
There are four categories into which mountain biking can be broken into. They are street or trials riding, cross country, free ride, and downhill. The level of safety consciousness differs in each category, and the riding gear and types of mountain bikes used in each category are different as well. This sport can not be performed if the rider does not have the necessary bike handling skills, endurance, and self reliance. Almost any place can be used to perform mountain biking, such as the back yard, a gravel roads, and country back roads.'
